LABORATORY KNOWLEDGE
* Gained extensive laboratory knowledge in biology, chemistry, and physics.
* In laboratory settings, have aided with medical procedures including blood work, anesthesia, animal euthanasia, as well as prep for surgery and x-ray.
* Have learned how to prepare slides; was instructed in using lighting and magnification and both the oil/non-oil viewing of the slides.
* Have created chemical compounds and analysed them using chemical, reflux, cooling, heating, and evaporation techniques.
* Have utilized gel electrophoresis to determine sample contents; have become skilled in titration experiments to determine amount of substance in a solution.
EDUCATION
Earned Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree with a major in Biological Sciences, University of California, Irvine, CA, 2000.
* Excelled in course work in genetics, cell biology, parasitology, psychobiology, molecular biology, and ecology as well as chemistry and organic chemistry.
* Completed five biology labs, five chemistry labs, and two physics labs.
In high school, was an honors student and excelled in advanced physics, chemistry and calculus as well as three years of both Spanish and German.
LANGUAGES
Speak German and Spanish; can read/write both languages with moderate proficiency.
EXPERIENCE
Biology Student/Laboratory Technician. University of California, Irvine, CA (1998-2000)
Gained insight into laboratory operations while performing as a student in biology, chemistry, and physics labs in the process of earning my B.S. degree; completed in four years a rigorous degree program which many students take five years to finish.
* While earning my degree, worked as a Receptionist/Administrative Assistant at the University of California’s Human Resources Department.
* Also worked in a sales job at Pet Haven, a pet store; frequently explained to customers how to use medications we sold; cared for dogs, cats, mice, rats and snakes.
Veterinary Assistant. University City Veterinary Clinic, San Diego, CA (1997)
At a busy clinic, aided the vet in procedures which included prepping the animals for surgery by shaving and sterilizing the area, assisting with surgeries including spays and ovariohysterectomies, and performing minor surgeries for broken legs and internal injuries; also assisted in taking X-rays.
* Collected and prepared samples and created slides which I viewed under the microscope to determine presence of parasites; used a combination chemical/centrifuge technique to check blood samples for feline leukemia.
* Mastered the use of the fecal float method.
PERSONAL
Am a very creative person who enjoys the research, analysis, and problem solving that goes on in a laboratory. Have been fortunate in having a strong academic family background which has given me feelings of security, stability, and confidence. Enjoy horseback riding.
